A branch that does not remain on the tree withers away. It withers because there is no more sap. Jesus is the vine. The sap is the Holy Spirit. When you understand that you are this branch that needs both the Tree and the Sap to live, you understand that without Him you can do nothing. When you understand your condition as a branch, as a servant, you start seeing things from a different perspective.
Without Him, you can’t do anything, you can’t solve anything, and you can’t endure anything. This is why the most important thing is to abide in Him, connected to the Trunk, receiving the Sap that gives life to produce fruit. A branch can’t survive alone, and it can’t bear fruit by itself. A branch is not independent from the tree. Only those who don’t insist on laying down their own roots and depending on their own strength can bear fruit. In order to be grafted into the Vine, you need to let go of your roots and rely on the Tree that gives you life.
When you depend entirely on the Tree, you bear fruit—fruit of good character that shows that you and the Tree are one. Once a branch receives the Sap, it can bear fruit to feed many. The branches are strong because the Tree is strong. Their fruits are healthy because the Tree is healthy. Be conscious of this from now on. If you are a branch, you no longer depend on yourself; you depend on the Tree that sustains you. Instead of worrying about what you have to do, worry about remaining in Jesus, for without Him you can do nothing. It’s not because being independent is forbidden, but because it’s simply impossible.
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)
